Slow Run-Offs...Delayed decisions...What's our alternative?...No free lunch for these candidates...
Slow morning at the polls as I drove around town this morning. Which wasn't entirely unexpected. In a county where only 13% of the more than two hundred fifty thousand eligible voters turning out for the March primary, this decline was bound to happen. What is unexpected is this sudden flopping back and forth in my mind as to who I should vote for the next Hidalgo County District Attorney.
On one hand we have an incumbent District Attorney who isn't the most personable human being on the planet. But so what, right? If we're voting a person to elected office on the premise that we have a guaranteed smile and a handshake every time we see them at the local convenience store while grabbing our favorite breakfast taco, we're in bigger trouble than I thought. It shouldn't be about that really. And in most cases, it isn't for me, except when it comes to how these elected officials get it into their heads that all of a sudden our voice isn't important anymore. And at twenty three years in office, I wonder if Rene Guerra has forgotten that, i.e. how he handled the Irene Garza case, "if you believe pigs can fly", etc. Frustration is what I felt. Here was a man, in essence, and maybe he didn't mean it this way, but it came across this way, who made it seem to us that his office is his business and we as citizen's have no right to second guess his decisions. Well, maybe, or maybe not. But one thing's for sure, this is an elected position that most of us have grown tired of the same treatment from a District Attorney who finally realises he has to do the whole smile, dog and pony show for us if he wants our votes. Hence the negative campaign ads against his opponent, Alma Garza.
That's our alternative. An opponent who is married to as Rene Guerra put it, "his nemesis" on Valley Newsline this past Sunday. He also went on to say that the reason he moved Alma Garza from the one office to another while she was at the D.A.'s office was because of his newly found knowledge that Garza was connected to Hector Villarreal. Talk about not giving someone the credit they deserve to stand on their own. To make the decision to run for District Attorney on her own terms, on her own record. No, Guerra had to bring in the issue of her husband being behind the decision to run for District Attorney all along. Which is at most, an unfair assessment of her decision to run. But then again, maybe our District Attorney knows something we don't. In which case, it was pretty naughty of him to just give us a tidbit of the whole picture, the tip of the iceberg to what the citizens of Hidalgo County would be in for if we elect Alma Garza. Should we worry then, that because Garza is married to a powerful attorney, this may lead to a conflict of interest somewhere down the line? Maybe so, maybe so. Then we're back to square one.
Trying to figure out who is the best alternative, or as most political enthusiasts would say, "the lesser of the two evils" is not an easy task, especially this year, when my vote for another elected official didn't get me what I thought our county deserved. Jesus, this whole run-off fiasco just causes headaches and ulcers. One of which I already have, the other is just a matter of time, and enough of these types of situations to get it going. Ben Franklin is quoted as saying, "the only sure things in life are death and taxes". Yes, but add that to a law of economics which states, "There's no such thing as free lunch".
I suspect our candidates got a taste of that during this run-off election.

We need to leave the Irene Garza case alone. Yes Mr.Guerra did say that harsh somewhat sarcastic quote, but you can only do so much. If a few jurys can't come up with a case (a murder case at that) then what else can Mr.Guerra do? People back in the day mishandled the evidence, the witnesses didn't remember anything, and the D.A. did all that he could possibly do and again the jury never found enough evidence to take the trial to court.Yes we're sorry Irene Garza died, but this is the real world, you can't blame everything on one person, the district attorney doesn't handle the evidence on the spot, he doesn't position witnesses to a crime and help them remember everything. What more closure can a family get than what has happened w/the case in the past? Why re-open a very very old court case, when over time people who might even remember what that case was about, are not going to think back and remember detailed evidence. Irene Garza this, Irene Garza that, shes gone, the case is gone, keep on keepin' on. And about Alma Garza? Don't tell me her stupidity hasn't raised some red flags..I believe I remember seeing in one of her ads thats had a lot of "Why" questions...one of them that got my attention (that made me spit out my chorizo and egg taco) was her "Why are the prisons over crowded?" question. Seriously, if this so called "legit" candidate has credentials that make her knowledgeable about the whole criminal justice aspect of her job, then why even ask that stupid, stupid question? I'm sure kids in High School or young adults in college (like myself) were laughing. THERE ARE OVERCROWDED PRISONS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES IN EVERY DAMNED CITY / COUNTY / STATE! Its not the district attorney's fault, you'd think thats a good sign because they put the bad people behind bars and that leads to prison overpopulation. Like my good friend Carlos Mencia said " DURR DE DURRRRR!!!! ( dee de deeee)" Wake up people. Alma Garza is a liar, she can dish the words and controversy but once it comes in her direction she curls up into her little ball that she calls a "lawsuit" its a negative fact ad campaign. If you've taken a business law course or any course period, you'd know that if its a fact..you can go to town with it...if its a lie..then theres something wrong, the only lie in that damned lawsuit is that the stupid banshee looking lady claims she "didn't know about her husband's debt." GIVE ME A BREAK! you mean to tell me you don't know that you've got a sh*tload of money in unpaid taxes?! LAWL!(lol). Someone needs to slap that lady and make sure she knows what the hell shes saying at all times, and where her money is going (and not going...ahem..the tax dept!) Of course someone is going to say "You're a Rene Guerra supporter" Pos good job homie! You've got it right! Theres only so many ways to handle cases, and only so many things any person can do, people like us will not know what kind of fire people are under in public office positions such as District Attorney..if we let the man do his thing (Rene Guerra) you'll see why you should have voted / or voted for the right candidate. If his 6Term (24 year) Track record isn't enough for you, then what is? Oh hey, one more thing Alma Garza said "omigod people have come up to me and say WE NEED A CHANGE, please Alma help us" Vete la chingada puta, thats probably yet another lie that, that lady has said. Her campaign is all about false promises and her obviously dishing out words but not being able to take any in return. If you can't take the heat Alma, then get the hell out of the kitchen, and come to the back so I can slap you with a spatula filled with maza. We will find out today, obviously who is the winner, but if that banshee of a lady is in office, all hell will break loose. (Oh and not enough valley people care about politics, see the voter turn-out to find out how much they care! or need a change!) YAY!!!!!!
A vote for Rene Guerra is a vote for your mother, father, brother, sister, dog and cat. He does and will do the job for as long as he is able (and hopefully re-elected). And by golly' he does a f$ckin' good job.
A vote for Alma " The Banshee Looking Lady w/too much Makeup " Garza is a vote for the devil.
Um, now tell us how you really feel. I think you held back some there.
